Sustainability in Design: Not a Trend, It’s a Responsibility
It’s can be hard to keep up with all the new trends, ideas and buzzwords popping up and disappearing almost overnight. Sustainability, however, is not just a short-lived trend but a core responsibility. When it comes down to something as important as ensuring a world to leave to our children, it is far more than just the latest craze. It’s a promise to future generations, which cannot be left to chance. At Carbon Creative, we are proud to say that sustainability has always been at the heart of what we do.
What Does Sustainability Actually Mean?
Sustainability isn’t solely about turning off the light switches or recycling. It’s a holistic approach of consistently trying to do a little bit better and make sure our decisions today don’t negatively impact tomorrow. For our sustainable design agency, it means balancing our creative work with care for the people and the planet. It’s about not only making work that looks good and performs brilliantly – but also supports a better, greener world.
What is Greenwashing And How Can We Move Beyond it?
Yet another buzzword – but what does it actually mean? More importantly, how can we move past it? Greenwashing is the practice of making misleading claims about a product, service, or company’s environmental benefits to appear more sustainable than it truly is. In the marketing and design industry, we see plenty of brands jumping on the bandwagon with the goal to “look green” – eager to tick a box. This misses the point entirely. Real sustainability is measured in actions, not just aspirations.
At Carbon Creative, that means going the extra mile. Every project we complete, big or small, we plant a tree in Greater Manchester, working with local rangers and schools to give back to our communities. Buy one, get one tree!
Our values are always in mind and we’re constantly looking for ways we can minimise negative impact and maximise positive change. We do this by creating designs that are built to last, using resources wisely and giving back to the local community wherever we can!
It’s more than just our name – it’s how we work everyday.
Why Businesses Must Take Sustainability as a Responsibility
Climate change, biodiversity loss, resource depletion unfortunately aren’t future problems. They’re happening now. As designers, web developers, but most importantly just as caring people, we have a responsibility to ensure we are contributing to regeneration. Responsibility is at the centre of everything we do and are continuously evaluating our processes. Our approach, developed and refined over the years (23 years to be exact!) [about us] ensures sustainability isn’t just an afterthought.
5 Easy Ways Your Brand Can Lead The Sustainability Movement
So, you like the sound of shaping a greener planet, but what can you actually do to make a difference? Here are a few practical steps to move your brand beyond trends and towards a better future.
- Make responsibility part of your culture: all great results start with internal values. Create a culture where sustainability is part of your daily decisions. Make sure to regularly check-in and celebrate the small wins!
- Set goals: every success story starts with having some clear objectives. Work out what it is you can contribute and why this is important. Make sure it’s measurable so you can track your progress and give yourself a pat on the back for all your sustainability achievements.
- Give back: where possible can you volunteer your time, resources or expertise to a great cause? This could be anything from volunteering at a food bank to gardening (we had a fabulous time lavender harvesting at Ordsall Hall)
- Collaborate, collaborate, collaborate: get people involved! This is where all the fun is – can you get some clients, community groups or even strangers to help? Having a diverse perspective is crucial in community-driven sustainability!
- Finally, evaluate: things are never stagnant in the world of sustainability. There is no fixed destination or straightforward end goal. Keep learning, growing and evolving, and stay open minded.
The Road Ahead
At Carbon, sustainability is just the start. We know there is always something more to learn, new goals to set out and more positive impact to make. Our vision stands strong: to continue to weave responsibility into every pixel, print and project we encounter. We’re so proud of the trees we’ve planted, the communities we’ve worked with and the legacy we’re building – and we would love to help you do the same.
Let’s try and make a creative industry (and world) that we’re proud of.
