Designing With Impact: How We Build Sustainable Brands From the Ground Up

What isn’t sustainable

When people talk about sustainability, they often jump straight to the good stuff – recycled materials, greener choices, community projects. But to understand what is sustainable, we also need to be honest about what isn’t.
Sustainability isn’t just about the planet. It’s about people, purpose, and long-term thinking. Here’s what unsustainable looks like to us:

  • No plan. Running a business without direction leads to short-term decisions and missed opportunities. Real sustainability needs a clear strategy.
  • Ignoring people.Underpaying, overworking, or overlooking your team isn’t sustainable. People keep a business moving – their wellbeing matters.
  • Unethical choices. Cutting corners for quick wins breaks trust. Long-lasting brands do the right thing, even when it’s harder.
  • Hurting the environment. Ignoring waste, pollution, or overconsumption isn’t an option. Every business has a responsibility to reduce its impact.

People, planet, profit

At Carbon, these three pillars guide everything we do.

  • People. We believe in fairness, respect, and balance. We pay the Living Wage, support flexible working, and create a positive, open environment.
  • Planet. We get involved in real, hands-on work – volunteering, supporting environmental projects, and choosing lower-impact options wherever we can.
  • Profit. A sustainable business must also be financially healthy. We track our performance to stay aligned with our growth plan, because profit lets us reinvest in our people and the planet.

Designing sustainably for our clients

When we design with sustainability in mind, we focus on practical, meaningful choices. We suggest digital over print when it makes sense, explore eco-friendly packaging, ensure messaging is clear and honest, and highlight the most important parts of a sustainable story. We also ensure everything we create is accessible and aligned with the brand’s values.

Sustainability sits at the centre of our work. We choose clients and projects with real purpose and social value. We build brands designed to make a positive impact – not just a profit.

For us, being sustainable means being open, responsible, and future-focused. It’s about supporting people, protecting the planet, and planning ahead. That’s how we create brands that truly last.
