Manchester Climate Change Agency | In Our Nature – Wormery Animation
In Our Nature is an initiative run by Manchester Climate Change Agency, which has the ambition of Manchester becoming zero carbon by 2038. With this being achieved through tackling the effects of climate change. Engaging with a broad range of community groups with projects ranging from turning alleyways into pockets of nature, teaching people to mend clothes and how to build your own wormery. Looking to inspire Manchester to make small changes, which lead to making a big difference.
Brief and objectives
Worms play a crucial role in soil health, waste reduction and food growing, yet most people don’t realise just how valuable they are. In Our Nature had a project with Manchester Mushroom Co-op (Myco) in order to show how to create a wormery and help spread the word about how important worms are. In partnership with Manchester Climate Change Agency, we produced a short, engaging animation that inspires small, practical actions – helping people understand the environmental benefits of wormeries and how to make one.
Social value
This was a social value project we donated as part of our commitment to using creativity for positive environmental impact. It also became an opportunity to upskill our own team, developing our animation capability while working on something we genuinely cared about supporting.
Our creative approach
Using a hand drawn illustration style, in line with the In Our Nature branding, we got to work on creating a storyboard for each of the individual scenes which would make up the animation.
Sharing the visuals, as well as a written summary of the movements and animations which would be added at a later date. Upon receiving sign off of the storyboard, we moved to the animation stage, bringing the storyboard to life through adding movement to the visuals and sound effects to add points of interest to the animation.
Results and impact
Our outcome was developing a short 90 second animation, which was visually led and used words to have impact where necessary. It focused on two connected goals: explaining why worms are important and the environmental benefits they offer, and showing, step by step, how anyone can build a simple wormery at home.
Beyond the final film, the project created wider value. It supported a city-wide climate initiative, helped extend the reach of practical environmental education, and contributed to a cause we genuinely care about. It also became an opportunity to upskill our team, strengthening our animation and storytelling capability while working on something with real social and environmental purpose. This was creativity used with intent; we built something useful, accessible and made an impact on something we are passionate about.
